Text2Reader is a monthly stand-alone resource for grades 6 to 8 English Language Arts teachers tied directly to the British Columbia Language Arts Prescribed Learning Outcomes. Created by teachers for teachers, Text2Reader pairs high-quality reading selections from award-winning books with engaging activities to help students make meaning from what they read.

May 2013
In the May issue of Text2Reader, we chart a course for an in-depth exploration of families, in all their loving, complicated and messy glory. Our fiction selection opens the door on what it's like to live in a polygamous society where personal choice is subsumed by the good of the group. Students will think critically, examine different sides of an issue and write within the parameters of a specified format. In The Sea Wolves, we take a peek inside a wolf family's den and compare wolf family hierarchies to those of humans. Students will also complete an activity where they examine a text for bias. Our graphic novel selection challenges students to examine the age-old problem of individual vs. society, and gets them reading, writing and editing with their peers. Digital Nation takes a look at how today's technology is being received by different generations and calls on students to look at things in their world through new eyes.

April 2013
In the April issue of Text2Reader, we cast our eye globally as we take a critical look at food and food production. In Farmed Out, students will meet a city girl gone country, while Down to Earth introduces them to young farmers around the world. They'll contrast small-scale, sustainable farming to its corporate cousin, and will take it a step further in Food Fight, where Devin untangles a devious plot involving a multinational food giant and its desire to control food production worldwide. Digital Nation looks at food distribution—and takes aim at North America's voracious appetite for grain to support wasteful animal crops. Food for thought, indeed.

March 2013
March is Women's History Month, and Text2Reader has loads of thematically-linked activities and passages to get your students thinking. Our fiction passage introduces a family of women who work tirelessly to keep the money coming in during the Depression, while our nonfiction passage teaches a new generation about the accomplishments of Gloria Steinem, who was a driving force behind the second wave of feminism. In our graphic novel selection, Roza, or the Courage to Choose Life, students are reminded that women in other parts of the world struggle daily under the oppressive forces of violence and conflict. Digital Nation unflinchingly shines a light on the issues women face when working in the technology sector, and introduces students to dynamic and talented tech leaders like Marissa Mayer and Jenni Flinders. And don't forget the Readers Theater script that brings our passages — and your young readers—to life!
