BC Literacy Foundations

The BC Literacy Foundations Curriculum was implemented on July 1, 2010 to enable adults to develop knowledge and skills in five subject areas (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Information and Communications Technology). The Literacy Foundations Curriculum addresses the needs of adult students who have significant skill and knowledge gaps and who need to upgrade skills to be successful at the Grade 10, 11 and 12 courses leading to graduation.

The BC School District Continuing Education Directors’ Association (BCSDCEDA), in collaboration with the BC Ministry of Education, supports the development of performance standards to strengthen ongoing instruction and assessment of the Literacy Foundations Curriculum and to provide a common resource for teachers using the curriculum.

The primary purpose of this project is to engage adult educators in developing common performance standards for Core English Language Arts - Personal Writing Level 3/4. The standards will align with the current BC Performance Standards while recognizing the uniqueness of adult learners..
